Different, Not Less: BCS Advocates for Autism Awareness

The staff and trainees of The Hume Center's Behavioral Consulting Services Department spend their work-week supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. However, this past May 18th, the team kicked their advocacy up a notch by participating in the 5k Walk Now for Autism Speaks event! The walk is Autism Speaks’ signature fundraising and awareness event that takes place in a ton of cities across the country and in Canada as well. The walk is designed not only to raise funds to support Autism research but also to raise awareness about the increasing pervasiveness of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder. For their part in the walk, BCS created a 14-member team and raised over $600 for the campaign! The team also managed a booth at the event which invited the kids to enjoy an arts and crafts table, bubbles, and a trivia game which included prizes. Overall, the team feels the event was a huge success and would like to thank all of The Hume Center supervisors, staff, trainees, friends, and family members who supported and donated to the cause. The team can’t wait for next year!

But you don't have to wait for next year if you'd like to walk or run to support The Hume Center! You are invited to join Team Hume by walking or running 5K, 10K, or a Half-Marathon at Sevathon on July 14, 2013. Sevathon is a multi-agency fundraiser, health fair, and cultural celebration hosted by India Community Center. Click on this link to find out more information and to register!
