The Hume Center provides comprehensive multicultural and multilingual mental health services. The Community Mental Health practice follows a public health approach to mental disorders. We begin with an attempt to solve problems in the community where they occur, and in collaboration with involved agencies, social and/or family networks and schools. For the person who needs outpatient treatment we provide services in our clinics located in Concord, Fremont and Pittsburg. Services provided in many languages.

Who Benefits?

Prevention Services

Example: The director of a local agency charged with training single mothers in CalWORKS to enter the workforce was frustrated because many of them did not have the coping skills to be in the work environment and presented attitudinal and behavioral problems. Through our mental health consultation, the director began to understand the pressures on these trainees and became quite empathetic towards them. He got funding to provide child-care and transportation for them and began to screen people with severe mental health needs and refer them for appropriate treatment. Hume Center consultants also provided support groups for the students to help them find creative ways around the social and psychological obstacles to the completion of their training and entering the job market.

Benefits:

  1. The agency was able to serve welfare recipients more effectively.
  2. The trainees gained the self-esteem and skills needed to break out of the welfare system.
  3. Most trainees have found jobs and are able to retain them.
  4. The community saves tax dollars and has more contributing members

Outpatient Services

Example: One woman, the mother of a one-year old and newly arrived from India, was referred to us from a battered women's shelter. She was severely depressed and suicidal because her husband used drugs and alcohol and beat her daily. She spoke little English, so was referred to the Hume Center where she could be understood within her own language and culture. Initially, she believed she deserved her husband's treatment but with psychotherapy and psychological education, her perspective changed. When her husband refused to seek help for his addictions, she moved into a safer residence. When her husband threatened to void their marriage and send her back to India, she was able to get legal assistance with a green card. Rather than giving up, she utilized referrals that got her affordable housing, subsidized child-care and free job training. Now, after three years of hard work, she is working full-time for a decent salary, and expects her parents to join her soon.

Benefits:

  1. She got psychotherapy to alleviate her feelings of depression and suicidality.
  2. The child is being raised by a healthier parent in an environment free from violence, and has a better chance to reach his full potential.
  3. She did not become chronically mentally ill, ultimately saving hundreds of thousands of dollars the State would have spent to care for her and her child.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Example: One client had been in the mental health system for 17 years, including spending eight years in Napa State Hospital. Nobody expected him to re-enter mainstream society. During his year in our program, his first month's goal was simply to be able to attend regularly. His goal the second month was to shower at least once per week. Gradually, he regained his social skills and self-confidence. He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia following a traumatic experience while working at the Department of Defense. Now, two years after discharge, he is taking computer classes to refresh his skills.

Benefits:

  1. He is free of institutional care and can function in the world again.
  2. His family is relieved and happy.
  3. Taxpayers save between $120,000 and $200,000 because he is not in a locked facility.
